Jay Chou, who was rumoured to be a hot favourite to perform at the closing ceremony, didn't attend the ceremony yesterday.

Jay Chou's company JVR Music expressed: "Beforehand we received an invitation from the Olympics committee, both Jay Chou and the company felt honoured and happy, but due to the fact the contents of the performance weren't really suited to him, plus we were afraid he wouldn't perform well so we politely declined the offer from the Olympics committee, we believe the closing ceremony will definitely be very exciting and good to watch." Beforehand it was rumoured Jay Chou would lead a group of 4 to sing a Chinese style song, but it was denied by JVR Music.

I wonder what the real story is?!  The JVR response makes it sound he's not very confident in himself, or the whole shebang of the closing ceremony was just too much for him.  God, if I was his manager and he pulled this 'Oh, I can't' stunt, I would tie him up and physically kick him on to that stage.  Has he turned into a sissy in his old age?  I tell you something, in years to come he's going to regret it.  Silly boy!!

@ No.1 fan - that's interesting.  I never thought of it that way.  Less is more kind of thing.  To do something like that you'd either need an ego the size of the Solar system (like he's a bit too grand for us poor mortals) or it's an act of absolute humility and self effacement (who knows maybe Jay is a saint in the making!).

I think the interpretation of why he did it would be more negative than positive.

I'm sure JVR and Jay thought it through very carefully but they're human and they can get it wrong particularly if you're dealing with a collective psyche.
