GEM Tang 鄧紫棋
« on: February 18, 2010, 03:49:36 pm »
Anyone here heard of her? i just found out about her recently, i've been so sick of the hk industry that i haven't paid it much attention until recently. anyways she sounds so different from the rest of the crap out there, i think it's because her songs are written by foreigners so they don't have that generic hk style. she also writes her own lyrics and they aren't half bad. i think she's up there with janice in terms of music, maybe better...even.

anyways i recommened these two songs: all about u and A.I.N.Y

When I went to HK, I saw her face quite a lot :o

I like her "where did you go" and the mandarin song "hui yi de sha lou" or something like that. I find her vocals quite impressive, especially when she sings high~

She's literally the only canto artist I follow now (not including Nic Tse because he hasn't got any new albums). Hers was the last canto album I bought, just because I wanted to support her good music :)

Apparently she's got a sister that's doing one of those talent shows right now so there might soon be two of them singing :D

That would be brilliant! Two gems! XD

I see that HK tries to follow Korea a lot with the dances and stuff.... just that they don't exactly pull it off as convincingly. Makes me sad :/
Heh I remember when HK used to be really big in tbe music industry...

yea good times, HK music in the 90s rock. Actually 90s music was generally great. I'm going to sound like an old record but the problem with HK is the number of actors/presenters singing and not enough real singers like GEM.

yea I got that, as in old fashioned, opposite of cool.

I think the most ridiculous singer right now in HK is Wong Cho Lam. I mean WTF, how is he even a singer?

LOL Cho Lam xD he has to dress up as a girl all the time.... bleh xO
Idk. He's better off as an MC or someone on a show rather than being an actual singer. I don't think he sings off tune though.... does he?

And maybe I don't listen to enough HK songs, but it seems like they're all the same... The melodies always sound really soft(?). There's nothing that truly gives me an upbeat feel

I really like artists with versatility and have songs woth a bunch of different genres. I mean, there's nothing wrong with being specialized in one genre, but I get a bit tired when I listen to an album with the same genre all the way through. That's why I like Jay so much xD

I only heard him sing one song, I'm not saying he's a bad singer but just that it's not his job, it really borders on ridiculous that a comedian/mc can become a singer. You never see this sort of stuff going down in proper music industries.

HK music is basically all the same, I don't know why they bother sometimes, who even buys that stuff? I think it's what they call the karaoke genre, songs that are easy to sing and cater to that audience.

She writes all of her songs herself, but I'm fairly disappointed that her new step in the music scene has a lot of influences from Lady Gaga, of whom I don't like both musically and as a "fashion idol" if you will.

Yea I'm not too into her new style either. Hopefully it's just a phase. I really liked her first two albums.

Me too. I enjoyed her first two albums since her debut, she was much more innocent then.

I've given the new album a few more listens and there are a few very decent songs in there, I like this song:

This one is also pretty good, the MV is actually half decent compared to the other ones from the album
