Thank you, Studio Era for inspiring me to try my hand at writing fan fic.

Here's a short story which I just came up with...hope it's okay!

Chapter 1: Now you see him...

What a day it had been!

Two lacerations requiring suturing (and taking up a whole load of time while a dozen patients waited...impatiently); a half-hour blackout which meant no computer use and a reversion to hand-writing out every instruction for every medication; one staff member calling in sick early in the morning...gosh, was I glad to finally leave the clinic but darn it!
I had forgotten to bring my iPod with me today. There would be no music to plug into and get lost in whilst I made my weary way home.

Everyday I walk through the same underpass, which almost always sees the presence of a series of buskers.
A lone guitarist singing John Denver's songs; a Filipino couple belting out Top 40's hits; a guy with a ukelele trying to sing Somewhere Over The Rainbow, a la Mr Schue in Glee (and failing miserably).

Everyday I wish some busker would astound me with a Jay Chou song and I in turn would reward him or her very generously....I kid you not.
But it had yet to happen and I did not hold out much hope this evening as I hurried along to the underpass, my stomach rumbling as lunch had been forgone due to the madhouse morning stretching into the afternoon.

But...as I approached the tunnel, my ears pricked up.
Was I hearing things?
Were those not the extremely familiar notes of Ju Hua Tai, floating towards me??
The unmistakeable melody put a smile on my face immediately and quickened my pace (and my heart rate!) to bring me nearer towards the source of this refreshing sound.

The man in a pale pink hoodie, torn denims and black-rimmed glasses sat hunched over, his fingers gliding effortlessly over the keys of the portable piano, playing a series of variations on this beautiful song.
It was all I could do to prevent myself from squealing out loud and giving him a hug for his music which was providing a much-needed balm for my harrassed soul.

However, I felt that would be a trifle rude and besides, I did not want to interrupt his seemingly endless improvisations.
Strangely enough, I seemed to be the only pedestrian willing to pay him any attention as the hordes of rush-hour workers pushed on past me, quite oblivious to the musical genius which was being played out in that underpass.
No matter, I was lost in my own world enjoying Mr Pink Hoodie's renditions of one of my absolute favourites and nothing was going to disturb my moment of bliss.

All too soon, he reached the end of the piece and I started digging in my bag for my wallet to do the inevitable.
How generous should I be?
After all, this WAS a Jay song...how I loved Mr Chou's music!
And this fellow had just improvised on it...unbelievably well, at that.

I fished out ten dollars (that's alot; usually all I see on buskers' guitar cases are coins and two dollar notes!) and went towards him, ready to give him a thumbs up.
It was then that I noticed he was smiling and on his left cheek was a most adorable dimple!
As he looked up at me, there on his left upper eyelid just above the rim of his glasses was a most distinctive mole....goodness me, this was a true doppelganger for Jay, if there ever was one!

I mean....how could His Royal DIAOness ever be playing piano in an underpass in Singapore alone, right??
But then again, did I dare to believe it... maybe it really WAS him...after all, Joshua Bell had once played violin incognito in a New York subway, as a social experiment, and hardly anyone had recognised him.
Why couldn't Jay be doing the same thing?
My heart thumping anxiously, my hopes and spirits lifted, I continued walking to him and....

"STOP THIEF!!"
And all I remembered after I heard those words was hitting the ground, a splitting pain in the back of my head and the world went black.

"Miss, are you alright?"
I opened my eyes warily and focused on a friendly face staring at me anxiously.
It was the Filipino busker.

I got up slowly, rubbing the back of my head gingerly and reassured him that I felt fine.
My bag was on the floor but the belongings appeared intact.
I stared at the spot where Mr Pink Hoodie had been in earlier and to my dismay, realised that it was now the Filipina lady who was sitting there, with her keyboard, also staring at me anxiously.

"What happened?" I asked cautiously.
"There was a pickpocket trying to run away and he knocked you down. Don't worry, he has been handed over to the police," he replied me comfortingly.
"By the way, I often see you walking past here, listening to your iPod. You like music too, ya?"

I nodded my head and asked him, "Did you see another guy in a pink hoodie playing a portable piano here just now?"
He looked at me in surprise and said, "No, today it is our turn. No other busker is licensed to play here. We were trying out a new song today, actually. Something by Jay Chou...do you like his music?"

You are very welcome! Lol, and wow Janl! Your story seems so real! Hehe.. seeing Jay play something on the side of the road is very interesting! Mine is so abstract and fantasized...

Anyways, I can't wait to read more of it! :) But do you mind to not make the words appear to be italicized? It's a bit distracting. Thanks!

@Studio:

Glad you enjoyed my little story. :)
But I had not thought of continuing it, actually.
Was going to keep it as a standalone tale.

But since you asked, maybe I will...time and imagination permitting... ;)

Got some ideas today which I'm going to try out here slowly...and let's see what transpires as the story goes...

Chapter 2: Now You Don't

I gave a start when he mentioned Jay Chou; had he read my mind or something? That he had somehow picked up on my subliminal request to hear him perform something other than those same old Top 40 hits? And what Jay song had they been trying out?

But more importantly:
What the hell had just happened to me earlier on in that underpass?
Where was Mr Pink Hoodie with the cute left-cheek dimple and left upper eyelid mole??
Had my tired body but overactive mind conjured the whole surreal scenario out because of a deep-seated desire to hear Mr Chou's music all the time? Was it all an hallucination? Was my fandomania getting out of hand finally? What???

I must have looked a right idiot standing there as all these thoughts raced through in a split second because the busker waved his hand in front of my face, saying,

"Hello? Miss? Are you with me? Maybe you should go to the hospital for a checkup or a scan. You did knock your head against the ground quite hard, you know."
I shook my head slightly, reassured him (again) that I was feeling all right and asked him:"So which song of Jay's were you guys trying out? You sing in Chinese, too?"
He grinned and replied:
"The one he wrote for that movie about some golden flower. We've been thinking about doing something different from our usual pop songs and one of our friends suggested him as his songs are very popular in Singapore. And yes, we wanted to try a Chinese song too."

The song in question, is of course, Ju Hua Tai aka Chrysanthemum Flower Bed from The Curse Of The Golden Flower, that lavish and ostentatious movie which starred Chow Yuen Fatt, Gong Li and Jay himself. It was not one of my favourite Jay movies but the song was the one I had 'heard' and 'seen' my phantom pianist playing just now!
This was really getting beyond weird!

 I walked over to the Filipina lady, who was dressed in a pink pantsuit and said;
"Hi there! Care to play the Jay song you were trying out?"

She grinned and started on the melodius intro of Ju Hua Tai but the song sounded somewhat mechanical and wooden in her hands, unfortunately. Nowhere near the ethereal tunes I had heard earlier on and definitely without any of the complex chords and variations which had so enthralled me.

Her partner chimed in with the verses and crooned along quite in tune and with almost all the words pronounced correctly!  It was strange to hear this quintessentially Chinese song being sung by a Filipino but this performance surely said something about how universal Jay's music could be!

I let them finish the song, thanked them and fished out ten dollars to put on their guitar case . Some other passersby had also stopped to listen, (which was somewhat unusual in Singapore!) and a few of them also dropped some coins and notes to add to the burgeoning collection.  This was certainly not bad, by Singapore standards.

Gosh, I guess I was not the only one who had been dying to hear some Jay Chou music, even if it was not the best of quality!

I then walked away slowly to the nearby shopping centre where I had parked my car, deep in thought about all that had just happened.

Awww! It was a really good read Janl! :)

Lol, the hallucination, it was so real for the rest of us too! When is Jay going to really appear?

Chapter 3: Guess who??

My head was beginning to throb a little where I had hit it and putting my fingers against the hurt area, I could feel the beginnings of a large spongy bruise forming,

It was going to be a bother for a while and I was considering whether to head to the nearby MacDonald's to get an ice pack when the shrill electronic beeping of my mobile jolted me out of my reverie as I got onto the escalator going up from the underpass. I scrabbled hurriedly among the messy insides of my bag to locate the device. From experience, I knew it had to be ensconced somewhere between the main pouch and my wallet and voila!

"Girlfriend! Where the hec are you? Everyone's here except for you!"

Oh s***!!

Steph's  exasperated voice hit my eardrums hard as my mind whirled through another train and remembered that today was Friday. the 13th...which meant Girls' Night Out with my bunch of old schoolmates at Prime Society, where they served the best beef steaks, something I had been looking forward to for the longest time....how could I have totally forgotten???

"Awww Steph!!! I'm so sorry!!! The past few days have been just crazy! I just finished work...it was another madhouse day and the...."

I stopped short at telling her what had just happened in the underpass.

My friend had clearly made no bones of the fact that she found my obsession with the King of Mandopop simply over-the-top and that I really ought to have better taste in music or my head examined, her oft-heard remark to me being:

"Why do you like him so much? He sings terribly! I can never make out what he's saying!"

Any protests I made to the contrary held no water with her; I had long since given up on trying to explain to her about Jay's unique singing style, which to me, just emphasised how good his actual music was.

I quickly did my best to mollify her:

"Look...you girls go ahead and start; I'm just walking to my car now. With any luck, I'll be there in about half an hour, depending on the traffic. Okay, sweetie?"

She sounded resigned now:

"Fine, fine. Would you like us to order for you?"

"Hmm...that might be a good idea. Yes, please just get me whatever you're having. I'm so hungry I could eat a horse...or a cow..haha..."

Steph sighed at my feeble cliche (and I could so visualise her rolling her eyes) and closed off the conversation with a "Drive carefully now."

Walking up the escalator, I zig-zagged my way past the inconsiderate occupiers who had not thought to leave one side free for people in a hurry like me. Muttering one "Excuse me" after another and hitting more than one irate person with my lovely Coach bag, I finally reached the road level and semi-jogged into the mall where my car was.

The shopping centre seemed a little more crowded than usual this evening, but I put it down to the fact that it was a Friday and thought no more about it, as I almost ran to the exit door leading to the fourth storey carpark, where a family of four, complete with baby, toddler and stroller were just coming in.

Fumbling in my bag again for my car key, which was buried right at the bottom, I strode purposefully to my beloved pink Ford Festiva with the Hello Kitty dolls on the dashboard which was parked in an alcove, containing a singular lot. (I loved lots like that; it ensured a lesser probability of other car doors scratching mine by careless passengers.)

With a click on the key remote, the Ford's indicator lights blinked as I walked to the driver's side with a sigh of relief. I was just reaching for the door handle when I heard a soft groan.

I whirled around to see where that sound had come from, as there had not been anyone else in the carpark when I entered. Visions of being mugged and drugged or worse flashed across my mind, even as I kept my fists balled, one hand gripping the car key with its length sticking out in case I needed to impale an assailant with it (I had read about this in some self-defence article).

Another groan reached me and with my heart in my mouth, I went cautiously around the front of the car to the passenger side. In the dim light , I saw a man sitting on the ground, leaning against the back door, his face contorted in pain with his right hand cradling his left wrist.

Chapter 4: Is it? Or is it not?

As my eyes adjusted to the inadequate lighting, I could just make out that the man was wearing glasses, a hoodie and jeans, his knees bent and his sneakered feet crunched up against the wall of the alcove. He looked up as I gave him a quizzical stare and he said in Mandarin but with a Taiwanese twang, "I'm sorry, Miss....I'm in your way. But this was the only safe place I could hide in."

Hey! That voice and that slurred pronounciation sure sounded familiar!

"Was he...? Could he be...? Nah, couldn't be! Steph's right; I'm crazy..."

I inched nearer and as I took in his whole face more thoroughly, my jaw dropped and I almost reeled over in recognition and shock. Gone were the numerous warnings in the back of my mind about talking to strange men in quiet carparks (or anywhere else, for that matter), even those who appeared injured, incapacitated or looked like a celebrity. I had oohed and aahed over too many thousands of photos of this one man to be making an erroneous identification.

There was no mistaking his sharply-angled cheekbones, those small almond-shaped eyes, that aquiline nose (so much more defined than the average Chinese guy's), the perfectly-shaped lips, the gently receding chin with a hint of stubble and, wait a second, was that a beauty mark under his left eyebrow and the deepest dimple ever in his left cheek, made even more distinct by the way he was grimacing?
Once again, I must have looked a right idiot as realisation dawned on me that right there, right then talking to me was none other than...
"Omigod! You're...you're.....are you all right??", I stuttered in English, my heart palpitating away, trying to make sense of this impossible situation and yet feeling concerned as I noticed how immobile his left wrist and hand were.

He inclined his head slightly and for a moment, his facial expression turned to one of bemusement as he  answered my incomplete question, once again in Mandarin:
"Yes, I'm Jay Chou...this is strange, right?"
Thanking my lucky stars that the Singapore education system had made me adequately bilingual, I replied in his lingo:
"Very! Don't joke with me. Is it really you?? Never mind, what happened to your hand? Let me have a look; I'm a doctor...and no, I'm not joking," as I noticed his raised eyebrows when I mentioned my profession.

I turned around to check if we were still alone; we were. I squatted down next to him and reached out for his injured limb, which he reluctantly let me take in my hands.
My medical training had kicked in and taking a deep calming breath, I quickly noticed that there was no outright deformity of his wrist...which was a good sign. His fingers were long and elegant, with short clean nails and there was a silver ring with a huge green stone on his little finger. I palpated his wrist gently whilst keeping an eye on his face to see if my actions were causing him any further pain. He winced a little when I attempted a flexion movement but as far as I could tell, it was not likely to be broken or dislocated.(Thank God...I wonder if his hands are insured...)
Oh and did I mention how soft the skin on his hand was? Yes, his piano-playing hands which were not meant for holding guns, as he had quipped during a promotional stint for The Viral Factor.

I gave a small smile and said, "It looks okay. Probably a bad sprain. An ice pack would be good. Want to explain to me what's happening? Where are your friends or staff, anyway?"
Actually, I was still harbouring a small bit of reservation as to whether he really was who he claimed to be...given my recent head injury and the apparent hallucination earlier on, but I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. He nodded and made an attempt to get up from his uncomfortable position, placing his uninjured right hand on the ground and I instinctively put a supporting hand below his right shoulder to help him up.

That was when we heard the swing door of the carpark exit door open, with male voices saying  something in Mandarin, and before I knew it, 'Jay' had shaken off my hand, scrambled to the back of my car and all but disappeared from view, as two men emerged from the doorway and entered the carpark.

Chapter 5: Duped!

For a second, I was thrown into confusion, thanks to this unexpected turn of events. What was all this about? Who was Jay (if it was indeed him) hiding from? How should I react? Was he in some kind of trouble, unlikely as that might seem?

Out of the corner of my eye from where I stood beside my car in the alcove which was nearly fifty metres away from the exit doors, I sensed the two men striding quickly towards where I was, talking to each other in Mandarin. I could only make out some words but it sounded like they were arguing about something.

I turned my head slightly to have a better look and noticed that both were of medium build, one had short hair bleached blonde whilst the other had his greyish hair tied up in a ponytail. ("Eww!" was my immediate reaction). Interestingly, each of them had a camera attached to a strap round his neck. They were dressed in teeshirts and pants and Mr Ponytail also had a big orange bag slung over his shoulder, which was bulging with many different-sized pockets likely full of paraphernalia for his camera. My late father had been an avid photographer and had owned a bag which looked exactly like that.

Mr Ponytail beckoned to me as he approached, saying in Mandarin, "Excuse me, Miss. Did you just see a man running into this carpark earlier?"

By then, I could see that he had slanted eyes, a pockmarked face and had a stud in his left ear. His voice was rough and sent shudders (of the scary kind) down my spine. Intuitively, I realised that I was better off feigning ignorance, stupidity or both and that my Pan-Asian look would come in handy here.

I frowned, shook my head, shrugged my shoulders and replied in my best Brit-accented English, "Sorry? What did you say? I don't understand."

He appeared surprised at my response and turned to Mr Blondie who fired off the same question to me but this time in Taiwanese-accented broken English, "You see man just now here? He look like Jay Chou." (Like he assumed everyone would recognise this name!)

I raised my eyebrows, shook my head again and said, "Huh? Who's Jay Chou?", all the while hoping they would not poke around anywhere to the back of my car which, apart from shielding a man who definitely looked like Jay Chou, also had a prominent decal on the back windscreen proclaiming "I *heart* Jay Chou" to all and sundry.

At this, they stared at each other in consternation, probably wondering whether to pursue a further line of questioning when the beeping of my mobile erupted into the silence of the carpark.....to my immense relief. As I took my phone out to answer, the two of them whispered something to each other, took quick sweeping glances around the carpark which was still devoid of other people and started walking off towards the exit door and went back into the mall.

As it turned out, the call was from a number dialled wrongly and I soon dispatched of the embarrassed man on the other end, who had started off the conversation with "Hello, my darling Sweetpea. Did you miss me?"

I switched off my mobile and was about to call out to the man-in-hiding when his head poked out from behind my car and looked up at me inquiringly.

I sighed and lapsed back into Mandarin, "Don't worry, they're gone. You can come out now."

He half-stumbled out, nearly tripping on his own feet and I hastened to support him again, mindful that he had an injury. His right arm felt hard and muscled where I had grabbed him but I had no time to dwell on that as he looked into my eyes and said, "Thank you. That was very clever of you, pretending not to understand them!"

As he got on his feet and found his balance, I released my grip on him, smiled and said, "You're welcome. But were they the dogs? (using Jay's favoured term for the dreaded papparazi) And you really are Jay Chou?"

The corners of his bow lips curved upwards into a small grin as he nodded; the grin also emphasised his swoon-inducing dimple again and I had to remind myself not to start a fangirl squeal, which would undoubtedly scare him off (and which was the last thing I wanted to happen).

At that point, the exit doors swung open again (thank goodness they were somewhat squeaky!) and without turning to look, we both immediately knew that the pappz had not been deterred so easily and were returning for another search.

I hissed at Jay, "Quick! Get into the car and sit far down the seat so that they can't see you clearly!", as I got my key out again to unlock the car which had relocked as the door had not gotten round to being opened, amidst all the exciting happenings of the past few minutes. Without a word, he slid into the front passenger seat, put up his hood and did as I told him to.

I hurried round to the driver's side, got in and turned on the ignition, slamming the door shut, even as I noticed that the two pappz had started running towards us.

With a practiced hand, I did the necessary and screeched my way out of the parking lot, deftly steering my little car past the enraged faces of Mr Ponytail and Mr Blondie, whilst all they could do was look at the back of my rapidly disappearing Ford...and I am quite certain they would have seen the decal on the back window...and realised that they had just lost their prey who had been so close and was now going to be so far...or so Jay and I thought.
