Losing him was blue like I’d never known
Missing him was dark grey all alone
Forgetting him was like trying to know somebody you've never met
But loving him was red
Loving him was red~

Chapter 6: Escape!

"WATCH OUT!!"

Jay's panicked yell forced me to take my eyes off the rearview mirror, which I had been checking after I had zoomed (well, as fast as one can 'zoom' in a carpark anyway!) past the two angry pappz, to see if they were chasing us or worse still, taking photos of our getaway vehicle.

That was the last thing me or Jay wanted viz headlines screaming "Taiwan's Heavenly King caught in car with new J-Girl from Singapore!" or something to that effect. As far as I could tell, they had been too stunned to do so and had in fact, run the other way, shouting and gesticulating.

Adrenaline had kicked in and I looked in front immediately. With a swift turn of my steering wheel, I only just managed to avoid hitting another car which was backing out of a lot near the carpark exit door as I sped down the slope heading towards the exit gantry. I narrowly missed scraping the wall as well but patches of peeling paint showed where other drivers had not been that fortunate.

Jay had sat bolt upright in his seat by now and after giving me an admiring glance, was turning around to look behind. As he did so, his head came dangerously close to my left shoulder and I inhaled a whiff of his scent, which was definitely very pleasant. It reminded me of a recent report I had read where a fan who had been fortunate enough to hug him had declared that "He smells of awesomeness!"

"Ok, Ash my girl, now's not the time to be having such thoughts." a little voice whispered in my head, as I wrenched my brain back to the issue at hand and slowed down to approach the carpark barrier. My heart was thumping still but not with fear. Truth to tell, I was feeling a mite excited and thrilled but medical training had also instilled in me the ability to appear calm and unfazed in the most adverse of circumstances.

It was then that the sound of another car's screeching tyres became audible and I heard Jay mutter, "Not good. I think that's them. You'd better hurry up."

So that's why the two had been running the other way just now;  to get to their own vehicle and give chase, like vampires who had smelt blood. I bet they were already thinking of the scoop and handsome reward their boss was going to give them for this story.

Well, they had another think coming.

Jay turned back to face the front, at which point my car had already gone past the smoothly-uplifted barrier, thanks to the fact that I had a season parking lot there.

I looked at him and said, "Please put on your seatbelt. This could get dangerous!"

With my left hand, I was already pulling my own seatbelt down over my right shoulder at the same time and Jay seemed to realise the truth of my words, because he used his uninjured right hand to get his seatbelt down and clicked it into place firmly.

I drove out of the carpark and manouevered my way past the crowds of shoppers who were crossing the exit lane, hoping fervently that none of them would recognise my passenger, who had pulled his hood off and was calmly fiddling with the volume dial on the car's dashboard.

As he did so, the strains of Ju Hua Tai filled the car and I noticed him smiling with satisfaction as he also saw the CD boxes on the centre panel between our seats...November's Chopin and Still Fantasy were displayed there in all their glory. He started to say something but apparently thought better of it to allow me to concentrate on my driving.

Our troubles were not over yet, though as my habitual rearview checking showed that there was a car behind us stuck at the gantry we had just used. I had a sneaking suspicion it was the pappz and it appeared that the barrier was not lifting for them, something which I could not help thanking our lucky stars for as I cleared the mass of humanity outside the mall and hit the main stretch of Orchard Road.

Chapter 7: Cruising

Or at least, I *tried* to get onto that most famous of roads in Singapore; well known for being THE shopping and fashion district on our little island republic, with Armani, Gucci, Chanel, et al all having a presence here.

It came back to me that this was a Friday evening, a time when this thoroughfare was almost always packed with bumper-to-bumper traffic as almost like the whole of Singapore just HAD to descend on this place to do get their shopping and eating fixes.
The sky was also darkening and a few drops of rain spattered on my windscreen.

I surveyed the situation ahead of me as I doggedly (pun intended!) inched my way out, indicator light blinking and me waving and smiling apologetically at the irate drivers who were forced to give way or risk getting their precious cars bumped into, one of which happened to be a white Lamborghini, whose driver raised his left hand at me angrily. I heard Jay whistle admiringly, but whether it was for the Lambo or my driving skills, I could not be certain.

As I slowly but surely filtered my way across the six lanes of the packed carriageway, Jay remarked casually:

"You're good at this."

Having reached the lane I wanted, I turned my head slightly towards him and smirked:

"You sound impressed."

He laughed out loud and replied:

"Well, I have not had many chances to be driven by a lady before, and definitely not whilst I'm in Singapore."

I was about to give a smart rejoinder to that when a loud clap of thunder sounded and before you could say Jack Robinson, the heavens opened in the sudden and torrential way which only a tropical downpour can, and I had to turn on the windscreen wipers full blast as the visibility rapidly diminished. The strains of Ju Hua Tai faded into the background of the raindrops pattering against the roof and windows of my car. This was going to require full concentration, especially in a traffic jam, but was proving to be difficult as my mind was whirring about what I was going to do with my precious passenger.

Jay turned around to look but all he could see was the foggy back windscreen, with the wiper providing a clearer glimpse every once in a while. As the rain was extremely heavy, it was not easy to make out the cars behind and after a while, he gave up and instead peered out of the side window curiously, humming softly along with Ju Hua Tai.

The traffic was still moving along at a slow pace and I felt sufficiently comfortable to ask my burning question:

"So what are you doing in Singapore, anyway? And where are the rest of your friends?"

He glanced at me, thought for a few seconds and started on his explanation:

"We arrived just this afternoon and I'm only here with Darren. He has been here many times and we came to scout for some nice locations for a new MV. This may sound silly but I also felt like I needed to travel on my own, for a change without my whole entourage following me as they have been doing all these years.

I like Singapore as it's a relatively safe city, people don't usually mob me here and there aren't any papparazzi, unlike in Taiwan. But I guess I was wrong about that last point.

We were walking around the shopping centre when those two idiots recognised me and I made a run for it and somehow ended up in the carpark, where your car was."

"Don't you have a mobile phone? You'd better give Darren a call. I'm sure he's going crazy wondering where you are.", I reminded him.

Jay gave a rueful smile and pulled a phone out of his jeans pocket; it was an iPhone 4. He looked at it and shook his head.

"Battery's dead. I forgot to charge it before I left Taipei."

" You can charge it here. That's what I usually do," I replied as I nodded towards the white cable which was connected to the car charger,

He wasted no time in connecting up his phone which beeped happily as it started powering back up.

"Would you happen to know Darren's mobile number?", I asked him, without too much hope as hardly anyone remembers phone numbers nowadays, what with Speed Dial and phone memory.

"Of course not!", he laughed.

"Don't worry, I'll check for his number once the phone has charged up a little more and we can maybe use your phone?", he said as he looked at me beseechingly, with a lift of his right brow and the right corner of his lips.

Well..just who was I to say no??

The rain had lessened somewhat by now and consequently the music in the car became more audible again. It was Nocturne as the CD changer had switched to November's Chopin after Still Fantasy ended with Ju Hua Tai.

With the improved visibility, I could afford to ease up on my driving a little and could not help singing along with the chorus which Jay joined in with a knowing nod.

"This is one of my favourite songs of yours. But I like Ju Hua Tai even more.", I told him somewhat unnecessarily.

"Yes, I loved November's Chopin too. Filming the MVs in Venice was really special..."

At that point, his phone had evidently imbibed sufficient power as  it rang shrilly with an old-fashioned "BRRRINGG! BRRRRINGG!", cutting Jay off in mid-sentence.

He picked it up, still connected to the charger and from the one-sided conversation which went on, I gathered that it was Darren on the other end, as Jay apologised for running off without warning.

"I'm with a friend and she's showing me around Singapore", he told Darren, smiling cheekily at me, which made my heart skip a beat and would have caused an accident if I was any less in control of my car.

I quickly focused on the car in front which was THE white Lambo from earlier on and made a quick decision as to what to do with Mr Chou.

Jay ended with a reassurance to Darren that he would call him again to inform him about his whereabouts and hung up, putting the phone back into the cupholder where it continued getting recharged.

I gave him a sidelong glance as he touched his chin with his right index finger, cocked his head at me and said with that cheeky grin again:

"Hmm....so my dear Doctor, what's your name and just where are you bringing me?"

"我不是醫生,也不是魔術師,但卻能讓音樂活起來。
I'm not a doctor nor a magician, but I can make the music come alive."

Chapter 8: Decision

Momentarily lost as I was, enjoying that grin in the flesh, a sudden thought struck me and I exclaimed:

"Yikes! I hope those pappz are not following us!"

I hurriedly checked the rearview mirror to see if there was any sign of their car. It was difficult to be certain, though, as I remembered that it was white and to my dismay, I realised that half the car population on the road behind us was that particular colour and with the rain, it was even more difficult to see clearly.

A disquieting thought had also occurred to me that my little pink car would be all the more prominent too and easier for them to notice and tail.

I pushed it to the back of my mind and shrugged....we'd cross that bridge if and when we came to it.

Jay was still staring at me when I shifted my attention back to him to answer to his questions but at the same time, I was ruminating over what sort of excuse I should come up with for missing the Girls Night Out (and not liking the visual of Steph's face when I got round to telling her!).

But I mean....come on!

The situation now was absolutely surreal yet there was no denying that it was happening for real.

I, Dr Ashley Chan, was, in some weirdly serendipitious way, chauffeuring Jay Chou, King of Mandopop, along Orchard Road and he had just asked me where I was going to bring him.

I mean, what are the odds of that occurring EVER to any mere mortal???

Darn if I was going to miss out on the chance of a lifetime and anyway, Steph already had doubts about my sanity....what difference was this going to make?

Yes, my mind was already made up but I was not going to let His Royal DIAOness think he could just charm his way to an obvious fangirl's heart and disrupt her plans like that so easily.

"Don't you think you're being a little presumptuous, Mr Chou?" I shook my head disapprovingly at him as I continued talking with one eye on the road and the other on his face which was fast losing the cheeky grin to be replaced by a sheepish look.

"My girlfriends are waiting impatiently for me to join them in a delicious steak dinner and I'm late as it is. Should I tell them I won't be able to make it? They'll be very upset with me!"

"Aiyo...I'm so sorry for this! Yes, you are right. It was quite selfish and inconsiderate of me to take your kindness for granted. Ok, then you better drop me off somewhere along the road and I'll find my way to meet Darren somehow....".

Jay's voice trailed off with a definite note of uncertainty which tickled me a little and I had to stifle a giggle.

"Well, you wanted to experience travelling alone without all your entourage, right? I think that's very good for you! I trust you have some money, even if you don't have a credit card? Singapore should be very easy to go about on your own and Darren will find you soon enough."

"I guess so...but can't you just ask your friends if they'll let you off the dinner just this once...please?

"OUCH!"

Jay and I both yelped as I jam-braked to avoid hitting the Lambo which had stopped suddenly.

He because he had stretched out his sprained left hand on the dashboard and I when the bruised spot at the back of my head hit the headrest with a jerk.

"Stupid Lambo driver!" I shouted as I sounded the horn and winced a little from the pain, my left hand reaching for the tender spot and rubbing it.

"What happened to your head? Are you hurt?" Jay asked worriedly as I flicked on the indicator lights and prepared to filter into another lane after waiting a few seconds as the cars behind me started honking as well.

The Lambo was not moving on. Black smoke appeared to be coming out of its exhaust. Had it broken down? So much for fancy sports cars!

I gave Jay what I hoped was a convincing 'I'm all right' look as I waited for a chance to get into the next lane.

"Nah, some guy ran into me at the underpass earlier and I fell. It's okay; just a bruise."

No need to tell him about Mr Pink Hoodie, right?

Jay reached out with his right hand to where the bruise was and felt around it gently with those long, elegant fingers, saying, "That's a big one. It's worse than my wrist injury. You're sure you can drive properly? Maybe I should take over."

The warmth of his hand in that unexpected gesture startled me a little but wow, it was a *moment* indeed.

I would have died and gone to Heaven happy right there, right then.

"And not all Lambo drivers are stupid, you know." he protested as he withdrew his hand and pursed his lips into an adorable pout which brought on another stifled chuckle from me.

"Haha...oops! I forgot who I'm sitting next to. Your mother really pampered you with that for your birthday, didn't she?" I told him teasingly after a kind driver gave me a chance to get into the adjacent lane and continue down the road past Takashimaya Shopping Centre.

"I think I deserved that after all my hard work on The Viral Factor! I nearly died of fright jumping off seven storeys!" came his sardonic reply.

"So how about it? Could I please ask you a big favour to be my guide in Singapore for a little while? I'll even explain to your friends, if you think that will help."

"Uh...no, no...that won't be necessary, I'll text them myself," I told him as I pictured Steph's expression if she should receive a call out of the blue from Jay asking for permission to excuse me from Girls Night Out. She would just wonder if she was crazy too.

"So you're really okay with this?" he asked again, hopefully.

"Ok, fine. I'm only doing this because I know how helpless you can be without your assistants and besides, what if you run into those dogs again? Who's going to help you escape?"
I tried to sound condescending as that cute grin lit up his face again.

"And how's your wrist? Is it still hurting?"

Jay massaged his left wrist a little, flexed and extended it slowly and said, " Seems alright. Just a little sore. I'll still be able to play the piano...I think. I've had worse injuries when filming action scenes."

"Glad to hear that." I said with relief.

"You still haven't told me your name yet....?" Jay asked once more.

"Oh! I'm sorry...I'm Ashley but all my friends call me Ash. And I know exactly what I'm going to let you try whilst you're in Singapore. Are you ready?"

I'm trying out something different for the next chapter; hope you guys enjoy it. :)

Chapter 9: Jay

Was I ready??

You bet I was!

But what in the world had possessed me to tell Darren I was with a friend??

Coming to Singapore on my own with one half of the Drifters was turning out to be quite a wild ride; one which reminded me fondly of that MV for Besieged From Four Sides which we had shot in Venice...yes, the one with me and Zhou Xun fleeing from the papparazzi.

I had meant it when I told Ashley that the filming of November's Chopin's music videos had been a special time.

It had taken quite a bit of negotiating to be allowed to film in the Piazza San Marco and the surroundings and also to bring in that classic piano from Milan for the cover photo of the album.

I still remember Rong Ge's expression of disbelief when I had brought up my ideas for that but he knew that once I had made up my mind, I would not be dissuaded so easily, despite the costs and difficulties involved.

Ashley.

What a pretty name!

She was quite a looker too, her hair in a sleek, straight bob (somewhat similar to my dear friend, Lun Mei's hairstyle in Secret), warm brown eyes, porcelain-fair skin with a faint flush now, and a cute dimple in her left cheek which appeared every time she smiled.

She looked almost Chinese but there was a little something different; was it the sharpness of her nose? Or how large her eyes were?

And when she had spoken English to the pappz, she had sounded amazingly British. Or was it American? I could not tell.

Don't laugh.

Honestly, I can learn to play any musical instrument in two days but a few months of learning English in America for The Green Hornet was still not enough to make me comfortable using the language.

I had nothing but utmost pity for the extremely patient English coach Seth hired for me; I'm fairly certain she wanted to give up on me many times but hey, I did my best and I'm nothing if not hardworking. Besides, my fans would be watching this groundbreaking movie (for me); how could I let them down??

The events of the past half an hour flashed through my mind again as I wondered what manner of serendipity had led me to dash into the carpark of the shopping centre whilst running from those dogs and end up hiding where Ashley's car was.

I guess it had been an instinctual reflex when I saw that it was a pink car in an alcove far from the exit doors and the Hello Kitty dolls on the dashboard did the trick.

After all, how could someone driving a car with those adorable cats be evil, right?

Her concern for my injury and admission that she was a doctor had surprised me for awhile but the professional way in which she had examined my wrist convinced me.

I had been impressed already by her remarkable self-composure when she had obviously recognised me and when those two idiots came storming into the carpark, not just once but a second time. Not to mention how she had so coolly engineered our escape out of the carpark and boy, did she know how to drive!

Reminding me to put on my seatbelt was a nice touch and I was rapidly feeling safer with her, so much so that I could not resist turning up the volume of the car stereo as we made our way onto the main road. Musicians like to do that.

When the strains of Ju Hua Tai came on and I looked down to see two of my album boxes on the panel between our seats, I was certain that I had found a friend.

Of course, she might also turn out to be some crazy fangirl who was planning on kidnapping me and demanding a ransome later but nah...I pride myself on being a good judge of character and I could tell she could be trusted.

All the more when she reminded me to call Darren to reassure him and then offered me the use of the charger for my battery-dead phone.

Truth to tell, I had been a little alarmed when she sort of threatened to leave me alone on the street after admonishing me for disrupting her dinner plans. Of course it had been presumptuous of me and I had apologised quickly but it was becoming quite clear to me that I wanted to spend more time with this intriguing doctor who obviously liked my music (her rendition of Nocturne's chorus had been amazingly in tune and word-perfect!) and did not seem too overwhelmed by my fame and who I was.

It had also worried me when I realised that she had been hurt earlier on; what if she fainted whilst driving?

The flush on her cheeks and sudden intake of breath when I had reached out to feel the bruise on the back of her head startled me a little but also told me that she was not as cool as she appeared to be.

Hmm...was she going to take care of me after all?

But just how could she have labelled all Lambo drivers as being stupid??

I had to protest.

Her response about my mother's birthday gift was unexpected but cute and I simply had to tell her just how scary filming The Viral Factor had been.

I didn't even mind her sweetly sarcastic dig at my helplessness without my entourage (Am I really that horrendously inept in mundane matters in the eyes of my fans??) and considering how close I had been to being cornered by the damn pappz, I could only feel relief when she agreed to my proposition.

"Are you ready?"

Dr Ashley was now smiling at me beguilingly as she asked me that question.

Was I supposed to answer?

What did she have in mind?

Oh well...this should be interesting!
